Comparing Analgesic Regimen Effectiveness and Safety (CARES) after surgery
There is a lot we don't know about how to best manage pain after outpatient surgery. CARES is a research study taking place in Michigan, St. Louis, and Toronto to find out more information on what is the best type of pain medication to take after surgery.Â

ABOUT
What is CARES?
This video helps to introduce the study and explain what it is about.

Why your participation matters
If you are having surgery, such as gallbladder removal, breast lump removal, or a hernia repair, you can help!

Research studies have shown that patients usually receive one of two common approaches to help manage pain after surgery. However, there is much more we need to learn. First, we do not know which of the two approaches helps to relieve pain the most after surgery.

Second, we need to understand how often each approach to managing pain results in side effects.

This information is essential to help us understand which approach to managing pain is best to recommend to patients who have surgery. The CARES Study is being conducted in order to help inform these important decisions by patients, their families, and their clinicians.

What you'll be asked to do
1
Complete an online consent form
Consenting to participate in the study will be your first task.
2
Complete a short questionnaire
Once you've signed up for the study, you'll be asked a few questions about yourself directly on the CARES app or online platform.
3
Complete a daily symptom diary
For the 8 days after surgery, you'll be prompted to report any pain and potential side effects from pain medication you may have experienced.
4
Complete other short questionnaires
At 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after surgery, you'll be asked a few questions about yourself directly on the CARES app or online platform.
